Introduction
Our classmate Guy Cavallo has for several years worked to enshrine the memory of his father, Guido Cavallo, who was for decades was the wrestling coach and a teacher at Washington-Lee.
NOTE: some of us who attended Stratford were also taught social studies by Mr. Cavallo’s wonderful wife (and Guy’s mom), Delores.
The Back Story – In Guy’s Own Words
“One of the long projects that I have been working on is taking my Dad’s W-L wrestling film and tape library and digitizing it so it can be shared today. He had many 8mm movies (which only filmed about 2 minutes) of W-L wrestling teams, mainly from 1968-71. I also had 3 or 4 of the old reel-to-reel black-and-white video recorder that the school purchased as new technology. Those tapes would last about 30 minutes.”
“I searched for years to try to find an audio/video firm that could convert them and finally found one that could do it last year and paid for the conversion out of my desire to leave our legacy for future W-L and wrestling fans. While the conversion firm wasn’t able to fix the timing signal issue that causes some distortion throughout the video, it was worth it to see and hear these again after so many years.“
“I have been working closely with the Virginia Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame to get these converted and uploaded while we are still around to enjoy them. I also am trying to get my Dad recognized by the National Hall of Fame for his over .800 career winning percentage, especially since his peers at Yorktown (Chuck Harris) and Wakefield (Bob Epperly) have been recognized.“
“The whole site contains W-L wrestling matches all the way back to 1961, but obviously for our class they would be most interested in 1968-1971. Our senior year varsity wrestlers included Alan Rasmussen, Jon Busch, me, Larry Nash, and Alex Niko. Everyone except Alan is on at least one of these videos. Here are several of the key ones for us.“

Guy Cavallo’s Wrestling Tribute to Larry Nash
Once again the words of Guy Cavallo written at the time of Larry’s death
Larry Nash passed away suddenly last week. I was able to share with him all of the videos and photos that I have transferred from my Dad, W-L Head Coach Guido Cavallo just in the past month. He got to enjoy these and emailed me how great it was to see these again.
The video includes photos and three of Larry’s 1971 Home matches restored from video tape of the time. Due to the equipment used back then, the video is not perfect, but it captures him winning all three matches, including competing against Yorktown, Hammond, and TC Williams.
Larry took 2nd in the State in 1970, and was the Potomac District Champion in 1971. He was a teammate and friend since 7th grade, and we all miss him.
